Market structure
Jammu & Kashmir has two divisions that work as separate markets. Jammu division — Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch and others — is connected to Punjab by road and rail. The Kashmir Valley — Srinagar, Budgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla and others — is reached by the Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH 44) and now also by rail.
Jammu is the winter capital and Srinagar the summer capital. Wholesale trade for the Valley is centred on Srinagar, and for Jammu division on Jammu city, so partners in each division plan around a different hub.
Winter snowfall and landslides can close the Jammu–Srinagar highway for days, so Valley partners should hold larger buffer stock through winter. Cold Valley winters pose no problem for the 25 °C storage limit, but stock must be kept dry.
